Traditional OOH has always been valued for its ability to create large scale brand visibility. Today, digital transformation is adding a new layer of intelligence by helping campaigns respond to real-time signals and changing audience moments. With the use of live data and automation, digital screens can react to real-world conditions as they happen, turning outdoor media from a fixed communication channel into a more dynamic and context-aware experience.
At its core, a real-time trigger is a rule that connects live external data, like weather, traffic, sports scores, audience movement, or contextual moments, to what appears on a digital screen. Instead of a media plan locked weeks in advance, the creative adapts automatically based on conditions happening right now.
During the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022, near real-time score updates and highlights were pushed across 2,211 screens in 662 locations worldwide, turning digital screens into live information points for cricket fans. That is a trigger built on sporting moments, not meteorology, showing how far the concept extends beyond a single use case.

For years, the flexible portion of marketing budgets has often moved toward digital channels because of their ability to respond quickly to changing moments. Real-time triggers bring similar adaptability to DOOH, giving agencies and brands more opportunities to activate timely and relevant campaigns.
Moving Walls powered the McDonald's Philippines “Crave and Claim Deals” campaign, where the brand connected live temperature data to activate relevant messaging across seven locations, offering cooling promotions when temperatures increased.
This performance was measured across Moving Walls’ four-layer measurement framework, moving from Impressions to Reach & Frequency, through Engagement, and ultimately to physical Outcomes. The campaign recorded a 9 percent increase in store visits, alongside close to a million impressions in ten days and a 152 percent lift over forecast.

Weather remains a useful entry point because the data is reliable and easy to integrate, but it is far from the only option. Agencies are increasingly exploring:
By combining these signals with digital out-of-home technology, advertisers can transform screens into more responsive environments. Real-time activation allows campaigns to adapt based on changing conditions, helping brands and agencies deliver more relevant messages without changing their overall campaign strategy.
The next phase of DOOH will be shaped by the ability to combine multiple data signals. Real-time footfall, local events, time-of-day patterns, and weather conditions can work together to create more contextually relevant campaigns.
The principle remains the same: effective campaigns are built around understanding the moment, the audience, and the environment. As more agencies and brands view DOOH as a responsive and measurable channel, the opportunity to create meaningful audience connections continues to expand.
Real-time triggers were never only about the weather. They represent a broader shift toward smarter, more adaptive DOOH campaigns that connect with audiences based on what is happening around them.
